LAMPARA, small-scale fishing in Malta,
2013 - ongoing project.
Antoine Abela (seen in first photo) was born in a family of fishermen from Marsaxlokk, a small fishing village in the South of Malta. The family holds one of the oldest permits to fish using the Lampara method to catch mackerel, sardines and other pelagic fish.
Once thriving, the livelihood of small scale fishermen in the Mediterranean is now threatened by restrictive EU formalisation laws, industrial scale fishing operators and changing eating habits.
This project focuses on the experience of how new realities are changing fishermen, their families and their immediate community.
