Escaping war, failing economies and oppressive regimes many people turn to Europe for asylum. Escaping through illegal routes across the Sahara and a perilous journey across the Mediterranean those who make it ashore are faced with detention and a bureaucratic battle for recognition as refugees and asylum seekers.
Malta like other islands between the North African shore and Southern Europe has for the past decade or so experienced an influx of migrants from sub-saharan countries and the middle East.
These images mainly document landings of migrants saved at sea and the reception, detention and open centres in Malta.
