RAFAH, Egyptian border with Gaza.
Rafah is a small town between Egypt and Gaza. Divided by a border crossing it is also the site of numerous underground tunnels through which all sorts of goods are smuggled into Gaza. Most tunnels are dug from beneath the houses in Salah Ed Din Road where these photos were taken. They provide a life-line to the Palestinians but they are frequently bombarded by Israel on the premiss that they also serve to supply Palestinian counter actions against Israel. The Egyptian military guard the street for any suspicious activity across borders and often crack down on any civic activity showing solidarity for Palestinians living 300meters away across the border.
